romantic Russell

Russell, or Kororareka as it was previously known, is one of the earliest settlements in New Zealand. The township and surrounding areas are rich in history. Inhabited by Maori people for many years before Captain Cook’s visit in 1769 that put the Bay of Islands firmly on the European map. As a harbour it was described as "a most notable anchorage" and soon became a regular stopping place for whalers and traders.

In 1840, Kororareka had high hopes of becoming New Zealand’s first capital, however, this was not to be as nearby Okiato was first selected and then within a year the capital moved to Auckland. As a result the shipping trade started to dwindle and Russell lost it’s way a little. However, around the 1920’s Russell was "rediscovered" as an idyllic holiday destination, and made famous by the American writer, Zane Grey, who praised the Bay’s superb game fishing.

Russell Wharf and Beach from Russell Bay Lodge

The town’s Victorian atmosphere has been carefully preserved, for here you will find two of New Zealand’s oldest buildings, Christ Church (1836) and Pompallier House (1841). The Russell Police Station built in 1870 originally as a Customs House is still in use today. On Te Maiki Hill the infamous flagstaff stands proud and provides a superb vantage point for lovely Bay views across to Waitangi scene of the Treaty Grounds.

More information on the history of Russell can be obtained from the Russell town web site (www.russell.gen.nz) and from a thoroughly enjoyable visit to the town’s Museum.

As a holiday destination Russell has so much to offer, whether you want to explore the town’s history, experience the magic of the Bay of Islands from the water, take a sightseeing trip, relax on the beach and enjoy a swim, or pack up a picnic and go for an exhilarating coastal walk. The town has facilities for tennis and bowls, and is a perfect location for cycling and kayaking. On a more relaxing note there are numerous waterfront cafes and restaurants, making this a great place to soak up the atmosphere and really enjoy a most memorable holiday.

Put all these things together – historical charm, cute stylish architecture, a slow friendly pace, perhaps a little daytime adventure in the Bay followed by an evening dining alfresco at the waterfront - and Russell has all the ingredients for a truly memorable experience !
